START is an interdisciplinary programme designed to create real-world learning opportunities in schools.
START was created in collaboration between leading design academics, key business voices, and the High School of Glasgow.
The aim is to teach S6 pupils skills that the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and World Economic Forum have identified as essential for the modern economy, including:
Combining these skills with the principles of design thinking and inspirational mentorship from real startup founders builds the confidence of every participant, opens up new career pathways, and creates a generation of future leaders.
Participating in START is proving to be a transformative experience for school leavers.
To date, over 100 S6 pupils have completed the programme, with many using their experiences in UCAS Personal Statements or job applications with great success.
We have also seen some participants continue to progress their startup ideas after the programme concludes.
The ultimate aim of START is to teach S6 pupils how to solve real-world problems, so they have the knowledge and confidence to build a successful career in the workplace of the future – whether they want to continue on the path of entrepreneurship or not.
As a result, every stage of the project heavily focuses on the following essential skills:
Engagement with the START programme can broadly be split into three groups:
Build student confidence and open new career pathways through experiential learning.
Use your real-world business experience to inspire the young entrepreneurs of the future.
Become a corporate partner to help us identify and support the next generation of talent.
